Types of Piles
You have a couple of basic types of piles to choose from when reinforcing a foundation. For starters, you could use a drive pile. These tiles are driven into the ground and work best when you can rest the bottom of the pile on bedrock. If, on the other hand, the bedrock is too deep to make it feasible to drive piles down, then you should opt for screw piles. These piles will have helical fins, which means they have to be driven into the ground with a specially designed rotating head.
Advantages of Screw Piles
When using screw piles, you get a couple of main advantages over driven piles:
1. The machine used to drive screw piles into the ground is more compact than a pile driver, so you can use it in tight areas. You can also drive screw piles in areas that have a lot of established landscaping without causing excessive damage.

If you need to shore up the foundation of an existing building and can access both the inside and the outside of the building, then you can drive a pile on the inside and outside of the foundation, then run a rod from pile to pile and through the foundation to provide support. Finally, if you can only access the outside of the building, you can drive two piles in a row extending perpendicularly away from the foundation and then run a bar from the foundation through both piles to provide cantilever support to the foundation.
